Excursion to Pozar - Loutraki Aridaia

          Written by Maria Siritzidou

Pozar! A paradise on earth! A spa town of infinite beauty and in fact so close to Thessaloniki, only 111 kilometers.

It is said that the Almopes were the first inhabitants of the area. A tribe of giants, coming to the area in the bronze age. That is why they are also called the baths of Almopia.

When we arrived at the baths the weather was rainy but that didn't stop us from enjoying our bath in the outdoor pool. On the contrary it gave a tone of adventure and romance at the same time.

One can also enjoy bathing in the enclosed indoor pools for a more private yet less mundane situation.

The baths are thermal and, more specifically, they are mineral springs that spring up at a temperature of 37o C. This hot water is thermal and its visitors use it for relaxation and stimulation, while its waters help fight heart, respiratory, dermatological and other diseases.

Outside the baths one will find a multitude of small stalls selling selected handmade products, made with love by the inhabitants of the village. Some of them are oregano, tea, noodles, jams, nuts, wine and many more.

The area has countless hiking trails and the visitor can enjoy the unique natural beauty of the landscape surrounded by tall trees, bushes, colorful plants and herbs of all kinds.

The spa town is 3 kilometers from the village of Loutraki. Here one can rest in one of its picturesque cafes, enjoy a stay in one of its very beautiful hotels or its very picturesque guesthouses.

For lovers of local cuisine, there are several taverns with excellent dishes, inside Loutraki but also very close to it. One of which is Dionysos in Orma with its amazing spit steak (and all its grilled spits and stews) accompanied by a dry red wine.

The Baths of Pozar are an unforgettable experience for the visitor!

Written by Maria Siritzidou

Sunday morning, dawn to be exact, time 6.30 am and we start for our appointment. Night even and we are lucky enough to see the most beautiful full moon. We arrive at our destination and board the coach that will take us to the beloved Litochoro, an enchanting village built at the foot of Mount Olympus.

This village is actually a town, it has about 7,000 inhabitants and is located at the eastern end of Mount Olympus, while it is 92 km from Thessaloniki. Northwest of Litochoro is the Holy Monastery of Agios Dionysios in Olympus.

Litochoro

Litochoro is a popular town for those who wish to start climbing or mountaineering in Olympus. From there and walking about 20 minutes we left the town and headed to the Enipea gorge, at the foot of Olympus.

The hike in the Enipeas gorge crosses impressive ravines, green gullies (if it's winter you'll encounter snow, of course) and crystal clear rapids. We hike in a truly impressive natural landscape under the view of huge trees, in dense vegetation.

At some point, the Enipeas waterfall emerges, whose waters fall from a height of 38 meters, forming a beautiful lake! In the summer, the most daring dive into its icy waters.

Crossing the gorge you also meet Zilnia, a large climbing field in the area! Mylos is one of the entrances to Olympus at an altitude of 400m. The international trail E4 is 9 kilometers long and takes approximately 5 hours.

At the end of the hike you can enjoy a wonderful meal in the picturesque taverns of Litochoros with its excellent dishes, its wonderful appetizers and its red dry wine.

Olympus is a unique experience that will remain unforgettable in your mind but especially in your heart!!!

We woke up on a Sunday morning and looked for a nearby excursion to give us moments of action as well as relaxation and to fill us with wonderful images of winter.

There is no better suggestion than the nearby and enchanting Holomontas. Holomontas is a mountain in the prefecture of Halkidiki with a maximum altitude of 1,165 meters. After Athos, it is the second highest mountain of the Halkidiki peninsula. It has dense vegetation and consists of imposing deciduous trees. Some of them are oaks, walnuts, pines, firs and beeches. Here you will also find mushrooms, wild grasses and herbs, oregano and mountain tea.

In this area there are also many wild animals such as wild boars and for this reason their hunting is quite widespread here.

Lovers of nature and hiking will find their paradise on earth in this place and can follow various forest paths that have been carved in the area, from the village of Taxiarchis to the village of Vrastama and from Polygyros to the surrounding areas.

In the area of Holomontas there are Taxiarchis, Polygyros, Vrastama, Varvara, villages that are examples of traditional Chalkidiki architecture and you can visit them.

Consider the forest of Taxiarchis the village of Christmas Trees as 75% of the domestic production of Christmas trees takes place here!

Vrastama has many chapels, where festivals are held, with the traditional cooking in cauldrons of the ancestral kurbani.

Varvara is located in a beautiful forest overgrown with beeches, oaks and chestnuts. There you will find the famous Varvara Waterfalls.

Arnaia is the next capital village you will come across. Paved floors, courtyards, houses with traditional balconies, renovated mansions, make up a unique traditional settlement.

In the square with the plane tree enjoy your coffee or your food in one of its taverns.

Finally, for food, visit Apolymeni petra, with a very warm and friendly environment that will delight you. It also has sports activities for children in its outdoor area.

Holomontas is the right choice for a close escape from the city that will impress you with its endless beauties.
